How Long Does It Take for Asphalt Sealant to Dry and Cure?

If you’ve recently had your driveway or parking lot sealed, or you’re planning to schedule asphalt sealing soon, one of the most common questions is:“How long before I can use it again?”

At Hicks Paving Inc., we know that downtime matters—especially for businesses and homeowners who rely on their paved surfaces daily. In this guide, we’ll explain the drying and curing times for asphalt sealant, plus tips to make the most of your investment.

What’s the Difference Between Drying and Curing?

Understanding the distinction helps you plan:

  • Drying refers to when the surface is safe to walk or drive on without leaving marks or causing damage.

  • Curing is the complete chemical process that makes the sealant fully bonded and weather-resistant.

General Drying Time: 24–48 Hours

For most residential and commercial applications:

  • Pedestrian traffic: Safe after 24 hours

  • Vehicle traffic: Recommended after 48 hours

These times can vary depending on:

  • Weather conditions (humidity, temperature, sunlight)

  • Sealant type and thickness

  • Shade and airflow over the sealed surface

Full Curing Time: 7–10 Days

Even though your driveway may appear dry within a couple of days, the sealant continues to cure below the surface for up to 10 days. During this time:

  • Avoid parking heavy vehicles in one spot

  • Postpone placing items like trash cans, grills, or planters

  • Limit tight turns from steering wheels that could scuff the surface

Weather Matters (A Lot)

Ideal sealing conditions are:

  • Temperatures above 50°F (day and night)

  • Low humidity

  • No rain forecast for at least 24 hours

If it rains too soon, the sealant can wash away or cure unevenly—so our team always schedules with the weather in mind.

What Not to Do During Drying/Curing

  • Don’t drive on it early. You may leave tire marks or tear the coating.

  • Don’t walk pets on it. Sealant can stick to paws and track indoors.

  • Don’t hose it down or use sprinklers. Moisture slows the curing process.
